"I first glimpsed how huge are the forces which conspire to violate my
wholeness in a strange epiphany back in 1974. In February of that year
another man and I had united our lives. Never before had anyone loved me
who did not, at least in some measure, have to. All at once Ernest
showed me how Jesus' similar claim could be true. I could begin to
become whole."

June
2009 Events:
Dear Integrity Friends:
We
will soon be entering the month of June, which for those of us in the
GLBT community is Pride month. The 2009 Connecticut PRIDE Rally and
Festival is being held from 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Saturday, June 6,
2009, in
Hartford's Bushnell Park
(on the Capitol Lawn)
This year’s
them is:
Your Rights,
Our Rights,
Human Rights.
For additional information please visit
www.ConnecticutPride.org
Integrity/Greater Hartford
& Integrity/Waterbury Area are proud to host an information booth at
this year's festivities.
Click here for information concerning Hartford's downtown parking options.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
This is a unique
opportunity to bring the Gospel of Welcome to the GLBT community and
open doors of the Episcopal Church within our Connecticut Diocese. We
need volunteers and invite you to the Rally and Festival to help us at
our table or simply come to visit us and enjoy the day.
WHAT CAN YOUR
CHURCH DO?
Under the
umbrella of Integrity we are seeking representatives from all parishes
in our Diocese, as this will be a chance to put your specific parish
community on the map as a place of true welcome for Lesbian, Gay,
Transgendered and Bisexual people of faith. We are asking any and all
Episcopal churches to send one or more representatives (lay/clergy) to
be present at our booth for a segment of the day. We would encourage you
to bring along any literature about your parish and its ministries, as
well as any liturgical banners to display and represent your church.
We welcome your involvement in this important ministry. Please let us
know by May 30th if we can expect your participation on June 6th. Please
e-mail your confirmation to
john-albert.moseley@yale.edu. We would love
to see as many
WELCOMING PARISHES across the state join us and put your
parish on the map.
As many of us know, this is a critical time for LGBTQ Episcopalians as
we enter General Convention with such important issues facing us as the
Body of Christ. Being a presence of welcome at CT Pride is more
important than ever.
With Integrity,
John-Albert
Convener, Integrity/Greater Hartford
May
2009 Events:
The May meeting of Integrity/Greater Hartford
was held May 10th, one week earlier than usual so that our members
could join with their brothers and sisters of the Waterbury Area Integrity
Chapter.
April 2009 Events
Our
April meeting for Integrity/Greater Hartford took place on Sunday, April
19 at 3:00 p.m. at
Grace Church, Hartford
(55 New Park
Ave, Hartford, CT 06106) We will celebrate Eucharist together with The
Rev. Richard Maxwell.
The Rev. Canon Robert Girard Carroon
representing the Diocese of Connecticut was also in attendance.
The
title of our meeting was, TRANSCENDING the LGBT Spectrum. Barbara Curry
lead a discussion along with other guest speakers. This presentation was
be combination of life stories and guided discussions about the
confusion over trans people in and out of the LGBT community and how we
can be sure our parishes are welcoming to them. Resources from the
TransAction curriculum were utilized. “Most transgender Christians are
searching for the same things that other believers want: a connection to
their God within a loving community where worship and working for
equality and justice are the focus of the Christian experience.
Unfortunately, these searching transgender people are too often left
without a place to call their “church home” because most congregations
and religious institutions are not ready to welcome them as their
Christian companions.” From the TransAction Curriculum statement.
March 2009 Events:
Please join us for our next meeting, Sunday,
March 15th 3:00 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, Hartford. Our meeting will
begin with a simple Eucharist service in the Library followed by a viewing
of “Marriage Makes a Word of Difference,” winner of the 2008 CT Gay and
Lesbian Film Festival’s “Audience Award.”
The film, produced prior to our marriage
equality victory, portrays the personal struggles and political challenges
of Connecticut's same-sex couples and their families who are fighting for
the freedom to marry. Many of these loving couples have been in committed
relationships for more than a decade, but despite their dedication to each
other, they continue to be denied the respect, dignity, and legal
protections that marriage provides. Through compelling interviews and
archival and "slice of life" footage, Marriage Makes a Word of Difference
celebrates our common humanity, and shows why marriage equality is a
fundamental civil right.
 Our
guest speaker will be
Obadiah Ballinger, Religious Coordinator
for
Love Makes a Family.
He will be on hand to answer our questions on
the Faith In Action program as well as to help us take stock of where we
are now with our recent victory of Marriage Equality in Connecticut.
He will also hi-light Love Makes A Family’s
current work on transgender equality in our state.
Sunday, February
15, 2009 - 3:00 pm at
Trinity Episcopal Church
Integrity/Greater
Hartford’s next meeting is this Sunday, February 15, 2009 at 3:00 p.m.
@ Trinity Episcopal Church, Hartford. We will gather for a worship
service of Evening Prayer in the Library, followed by a presentation and
discussion on our up-coming General Convention and how LGBTQ issues are
brought to the floor. Our speaker will be Ted Mollegen who
has been a Deputy to numerous General Conventions, serves on the Executive
Council of the National Church, and he knows the legislative process
inside and out. In addition the Rev. Dexter
Cheney, Deputation Coordinator, will also be on hand to add his
experience to the conversation. [Other guests TBA.]
The Rev. Cheney was a sponsor of
Resolution #8: On allowing clergy to
exercise pastoral care in officiating at services of Holy Matrimony for
same-sex couples
This is a chance for us to see how Integrity/Greater Hartford can
draft resolution(s) concerning the “full inclusion of LGBTQ persons in the
Episcopal Church and equal access to all its rites” to the general
convention. Because as we are a Diocese that now has legal marriage
for same-sex couples, we have a responsibility to be sure our church
offers to us the same spiritual rights/rites.
We will be asking all to assist in the
formulation of Resolution to be submitted to the
General Convention which will be held in Anaheim CA on July 8-17, 2009.
Resolution
Guidelines for the 76th General Convention are available at
General Convention 2009 web site.
"The House of Bishops
and House of Deputies meet, deliberate and vote separately. To be enacted
resolutions must pass both houses in the same language. Both houses have
the right to amend legislation, but the amendment must be accepted by the
other house. Resolutions presented to convention come from four sources:
committees, commissions, agencies and boards of the church; bishops;
dioceses and provinces; and deputies."
